CAR WRECKED
FATALITY NEAR BELMONT BANK OFFICER KILLED. ACCIDENT ON NEW HIGHWAY. i (By Telegraph —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. John Martin Sangster, aged 21, a bank officer, residing at 10 The Crescent, Roseneath, was killed yesterday at 3.30 p.m., when a car in which he was travelling left the highway on the Western Hutt Road ’at Belmont and overturned down a steep 15-foot bank. Mr. Sangster received head and chest injuries and was killed outright. Lloyd Stanmore Jenkins, Weir House, Wellington, whose parents live in Wanganui, was Mr Sahgster’s companion in the car. He received minor abrasions. Dr. G. L. Giesen, outside whose residence the accident occurred, attended Mr Jenkins, who was then able to be taken home. The car- concerned in the accident was an old model tourer and was being driven north. Near the drive leading to Dr. Giesen’s house a car was being manoeuvred. It is understood that the car in which the young men were was driven over toward the right of the road to give the other car a clear berth. It was then faced with another car and a pole. In endeavouring to avoid these the car went over the bank and overturned. It was totally wrecked. This is the first fatality on this new section of highway since the Silverstream bridge was opened. Scores of cars parked at the scene of the fatality and held up traffic till moved on by Inspector A. J. Archer. Mr Sangster was’ a son of the late Mr John Sangster and Mrs Jean Sangster. CAR LEAVES ROAD. TWO DANNEVIRKE RESIDENTS INJURED. (By Te’egraph—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, March 5. Two Dannevirke residents were injured in a motor accident on the main Napier-Palmerston' North road, about 10 miles north of Dannevirke, at about 1 o’cock this morning. A motor car driven by a young man, Mr. Neil Russell. 16 Madrid Street, Dannevirke, who was accompanied by Mr Hector Frederick Nash. 3 Manilla Street, Dannevirke, ran off the road and over a bank, striking a telegraph pole at the foot of the bank. The car was extensively damaged, the ten ’--'ing torn completely off. Both occupan's removed to the Dannevirke Ho-niipi ’-'V ambulance. Their injuries were ■■ ported to be serious. Mr Russell's condition later had improved, but Mr Nash’s was reported to be grave.
