GALLANT EFFORT
OLD WOODEN SEALER KEPT AFLOAT TAKEN SAFELY INTO PORT. DOGGED CAPTAIN & CREW. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. ST JOHNS • (Newfoundland) March 4. Captain John Babcock and his plucky crew of 131 won a stubborn struggle to save both the sealer Ranger and themselves from the sea. They kept the vessel afloat for two days by furious bailing,, and the ancient sealer (was towed safely to harbour tonight at Trepassey, 81 miles southwest of here, by the freighter Newfoundland and the Imogene. Even then the captain and crew refused to leave the Ranger. Though many fittings had been jettisoned m the fight to keep her afloat, they chose her sparse accommodation to get some badlv needed rest. The Newfoundland later left for St Johns, but the Imogene continued to stand by. A message published on Friday said that the Ranger, of wooden construction and 520 tons, was sinking 15 miles from the St Lawrence River.
