KEEN PLAY IN FINALS. HAWKE’S BAY BEAT HOMEWOOD FOR DEWAR CUP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, March 3. Rangitikci secured their first win in the open event today when the final series of matches in the Hawke’s Bay Polo Club’s tournament began at the polo grounds off Omahu Road. Hastings. A big crowd was present for the match Rangitikci v Mangahcia. which was very interesting, the teams proving well matched. Rangitikci won 6-5 in the open event, but Mangahei won the handicap event 17-16. In the handicap even Mangaheia have suffered only one loss, that to Poverty Bay, who are unbeaten in this competition. The afternoon standard of play was very high, though again dust proved a nuisance at times. In the Hastings v Masterton B game for the handicap junior cup, the teams drew 3-all in the open game, but Hastings won the handicap series 8-5. The star match of the entire series was seen when Hawke’s Bay beat Homewood in the final for the Dewai Cup 4-2. This was the finest exhibition of polo seen in Hawke’s Bay for many years. Excellent horsemanship, fast and exciting rallies, clean stickwork and bullet-like drives kept a very large attendance of spectators on thenfoes from start to finish. The final of the junior open cup between Masterton A and Waipawa also produced a very high standard of polo, Waipawa securing a hardly won victory by 4 goals to 2. The display of polo in this match was equal to a good deal of the senior play seen here during recent years.
