INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY DANCE. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. (“Times-Age” Special.) An exceptionally large crowd was present in the Hastwells Hall on Tuesday evening last, when the Institute celebrated its fifth birthday. The hall was beautifully decorated. The evening took the form of a concert and dance, many excellent items being rendered, the contributors being Noel Dick, Mrs Morris, Dixie Quintet, Mr Tom Udy, Maori party, and Misses. H. and I. Madsen and E. and A. Dick. The hall was later cleared for dancing, 1 music being supplied by Udy’s Orchestra. Messrs J. and R. Dick acted as M.’sC. After supper the president of the institute, Mrs H. Elliott, thanked everyone for their attendance and called on Mrs Hobbs, president of the Hamua Institute, and a member of the executive committee, to kindly cut the cake and present the points prizes. Mrs Hobbs congratulated the maker of the. cake (Mrs McKay) and also the decorater of it (Miss Avis Dick) both of whom had done their work so well.
The points prizes were won as follow:—Seniors: Cooking, Mrs McKay; juniors, Miss I. Madsen. Sewing: Seniors, Miss A. Dick; juniors, Miss K. Larsen. Games competitions: Mrs K. Ngatuere. Best flower in the garden competition: Mrs Elliott. Mrs Broadbent, as the oldest member, lit the candles on the cake, and Miss P. Thorbey (the youngest member) extinguished them. A novelty dance held during the evening was won by Miss A. Cooper and Mr E. Smith (Rongokokako). Visitors were present from all the surrounding districts, while others came from as far afield as Pahiatua, Masterton, Lower Valley and Featherston. Personal. Mrs Moyes, Nelson, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs Harold Baillie. Mr D. S. George (Hamilton) is the guest of his aunt, Mi's S. M. George (Alfredton). Mr and Mrs K. Groves and their infant son are at present holidaying at Raumati Beach. The infant son of Mr and Mrs H. Baillie, whose face was burned with caustic soda' some weeks ago when he took some from a tin, is now progressing very well. The burns promise to heal completely. Eric Smith, the 15-year-old son of Mr and Mrs A. C. Smith, Newman, has returned home from the Masterton Hospital where he had been a patient for the past three years. Rheumatic fever was the cause of his long stay there but he is now able to walk with the aid of crutches.
