MARTINBOROUGH

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ANNUAL MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The tenth annual meeting of the Martinborough Women’s Institute was held in the Parish Hall on Thursday. Mrs Lamb presided over a record attendance. Members complimented the committee on a successful year, and a healthy balance sheet. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs Lamb; secretary, Mrs L. Chapman; treasurer, Mrs Knell; committee, Mesdames J. McLeod, Jolly, Hamilton, J. Chapman, Cuthbert, Whitehead, Findlay, Beveridge, Prussing, Gray, Wright and Tyler. Three new members were elected. Mrs A. Hardie, late president, and now of Suva, delighted everyone with a talk on life on the island, and told many humorous incidents in the life of a native houseboy. She was presented with a posy and accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Personal. Mr Eric McAlpine is spending his annual holiday in Dunedin. Mrs Winchcombe is spending a holiday in Wanganui. The Rev John Mann is at present indisposed. Mr and Mrs Fittes of the South Island are visitors to Martinborough. Mr and Mrs D. Lamb left yesterday for the South where they intend spending three weeks visiting relatives. Mr Baker of Whakatane, has been appointed manager of the Bank of New Zealand in place of Mr Franks. Mrs T. Boyd is the guest of Mrs E. J. Beale, Khandallah. She will later go to Marton to spend two weeks with Mrs Wale before returning home. Rev and Mrs Hardie, of Suva, are visitors to Martinborough, where they are visiting many of their friends. Mr Hardie will preach at the Presbyterian Church tomorrow. Messrs F. Duffy, T. Boyd, and P. Lowe, of the local fire brigade, left this morning for Wanganui to take part in the demonstrations to be held there next week. Mr Hewetson accompanied the team as delegate to the conference.

Mr C. Gair, of the local staff of Messrs Pain and Kershaws, left yesterday for the Pirinoa store where he will relieve Mr Lovegrove for a fortnight. Mr and Mrs Lovegrove intend spending their annual holiday in the south.
