CHEERFUL TONE
ON LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE
INDICATIONS OF CONFERENCE. HOPES OF TRADE REVIVAL. By Telegraph—press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON. March 3. As the most cheerful account for well over a year draws to a buoyant close, the city’s main topic is whether the steady upward adjustment of prices during the past tew weeks can be taken to mark the start of. a decisive cycle of trade upswing. Though unshaken by-Field-Marshal Goering’s blustering speech, the markets reacted on Thursday to grossly exaggerated reports- of the calling up of Italian troops. Little stock came out however, and this- was rapidly absorbed in a subsequent rally. Gild-edged securities benefited from a belief that the budget will not contain surprises and the nation’s defences will be strengthened to a point-, justifying a measure of quiet confidence. Dominion stocks fully shared the activity and were strong, with New Zealand’s leading on Mr Savage’s weekend speech. There was also consistent support for Australians. A hopeful tone prevails in the commodity markets.
