FINGERS SEVERED

FITTER AT WAINGAWA WORKS INJURED. HAND CAUGHT IN CHAIN MECHANISM. A distressing accident occurred at the Waingawa Freezing Works this morning as the result of which Mr John Smith, 55 years of age, of 14 Tararua Street, Masterton, lost portions of the four fingers and thumb of his right hand. Mr Smith was attending to the chain system when his hand became caught in the mechanism. First aid treatment was given immediately at the works and the injured man was conveyed to Dr Archer Hosking's surgery and thence to the Masterton Hospital, where an operation was performed early this afternoon. The accident occurred at about 11 o'clock.
