ISLAND DEFENCES BEING STRENGTHENED. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, March 1. The “News Chronicle’s” correspondent in The Hague says that the Colonial Minister, Mr Welter, told the Lower House that the Dutch East Indian army was being equipped with the most modern weapons. The defences of Scurabaya were being strengthened, and the fleet would be augmented if the international situation became worse. The Government, however, did not fear, that Japan would be aggressive in view of the good Japanese-Dutch relations existing for centuries.
