The Hon W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, returned to Wellington from the Waikato yesterday. It is officially announced, a London cablegram states, that Sir Malcolm Barclay-Harvey has been appointed Governor of South Australia. Mr A. McCarthy, Invercargill, who has been appointed a judge of the Native Land Court in Rarotonga, will leave on March 8 for Gisborne, where he will spend three weeks with the Native Land Court before leaving to take up his new appointment. Mr McCarthy has been registrar of the Supreme Court and Official Assignee in Invercargill for nearly five years. The death occurred ’recently of Mrs W. J. Viles, Apiti, who for many years was a well-known resident of the Feilding district. She was the youngest of the six children of the late Mr and Mrs Mace Galpin, Marton, who were among the early pioneers of the Rangitikei district. Mr Galpin arrived in New Zealand in 1840 after a six months’ passage in the shipe Adelaide. The death has.occurred of Mr CulI’ord Bell, principal announcer at IYA. following a surgical operation, reports a Press Association telegram from Auckland. Born in London, Mr Bell came to New Zealand 30 years ago. after spending his young manhood in Canada and the United States. On the inauguration of IYA 13 years ago he was appointed senior announcer. He was well known in dramatic and elocutionary circles throughout New Zealand. Mr H. C. Wilton, after 20 years’ service with- Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co; Ltd, as manager of the head office export department, has resigned his position because of health reasons, and is leaving New Zealand to settle in Australia. At a gathering held in the offices of the company last week Sir William Hunt, on behalf of the directors and staff presented Mr Wilton with a pair of binoculars and a wristlet watch for Mrs Wilton. Mr Wilton is a well-known figure in the seed and produce trade of New Zealand and Australia.
