THE HUTT VALLEY
MASTER PLANNING SCHEME i PROJECTED APPROVED IN PRINCIPLE. CONFERENCE AT PARLIAMENT I BUILDINGS. —. . I (By Telegraph—Press Association.) •' WELLINGTON. This Day. I Support for the preparation of a master town-planning scheme for the Hutt Valley was given at a'conference held in Parliament Buildings last night. The conference, which was convened by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, was attended by representatives of all the local bodies and Government departments concerned. Mr Parry said he hoped they would be able to establish a precedent which would be followed in many other parts of New Zealand. The response to his invitation indicated that they were agreed, in principle at least, that there was an urgent need to take-steps to co-ordinate local body policies in the Hutt Valley. The town-planning officer, Mr J. W. Mawscn, estimating the cost of preparing the scheme at not more than £2OOO, said he assumed for his purpose that the proposal would embrace approximately. 10,000 acres. By wise planning, and after making generous provision for roads and reserves and the needs of industry and commerce, it should be possible to house not fewer than 100,000 people in that area under healthy and congenial conditions. A special- committee was appointed to select a further committee of five experts to prepare a plan. A GOOD START. MAYOR OF MASTERTON INTERESTED. Referring today to the conference, the Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan, □resident of the Municipal Association, said: “If is a very good start and if they can do something in the Hutt we will be interested here and will be able to make -a beginning on the job of town planning.”
