COLLEGE SWIMMING
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE. T. Major this year holds every open swimming record for the Wairarapa College. At the inception of the College, existing records of both schools were scrapped, and standard times, based upon the previous performances of the Masterton Technical School and the Wairarapa High School were fixed. To claim a record a College pupil had to equal or better these standard times. The standards for open events were: 33 l-3yds , 18 4-ssec; 66 2-3yds, 43sec; 100yds, 67 4-ssec. The first two were Rex Lawrence’s times in 1934, the 100 yds was Lawrence’s time in 1934, and Major’s in 1937; the 220yds was Fred Lee’s in 1936. The standard time in 1928 for 220yds freestyle was 3min. T. Major lowered this time in 1938 to 2min 53 3,-ssec and again this year to 2min. 46sec. The standard plunge, 48ft was based on Pat Dyer’s plunge of 1935. 1 Ray Hendry last year reduced the 33 l-3yds to 18 2-ssec, and Major the 220yds to 3min 53 3-ssec. Major’s present records are: 33 l-3yds, 18sec; 66 2-3yds, . 43sec;' 100yds, 67sec; 220yds, 2min, 46sec; plunge, 49ft 3in. These, especially the 220yds time, will set future College pupils thinking and necessitate some large degree of concentration on training.
