CARTERTON
SWIMMING CLUB’S SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL. LAST EVENING’S EVENTS. (•‘Times-Age” Special.) One of the most successful swimming carnivals held by the Carterton Club took place in the' Municipal Baths last evening. There was a very large-attendance of the public and many visitors were present from Masterton, Greytown, Featherston arid other parts of the district. The attendance was estimated at 600. Prior to the commencement of the programme, the Deputy Mayor, Councillor E. McKenzie, apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, Mr Taverner. Councillor McKenzie said it was indeed a pleasure to ’ welcome such a large gathering as was present, especially competitors from Wellington, Hataitai, Lower Hutt and members of all Wairarapa clubs. He sincerely thanked the competitors for coming along and helping to make a successful carnival. He was voicing the opinion of all when he said those present were in / attendance to congratulate the winners whether they were local competitors or visitors. The services of a well conducted Swimming Club was an asset to the town and he urged parents to give their children every opportunity to learn the art of swimming and life saving. Swimming was one of the most healthy recreations and was to be commended to all. It was pleasing to note that swimming was coming back in popularity in Carterton, and it would be further encouraged'by the presence of visitors from other centres in promoting its welfare. During the evening Mr S. Higinbotham’s public address' system was used to supply music for the carnival and also to announce the winners of the events. Pickard; hon. secretary, Mi’ E. R. Wilkins; in charge ,of supper, Mr Les. Sorensen. A feature Of the evening was the appearance of Mr R. Hatchwell,. New Zealand champion from Wellington, and his efforts were, as well as those of other winning competitors, applauded. Personal. At last night’s meeting of the Carterton Borough Council it was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Mr and Mrs J. Nilsen, Harry was drowned in the Carterton Swimming Eaths on Monday.
