NEW EXPEDITION
ELLSWORTH GOING SOUTH AGAIN PROPOSAL TO SPEND WINTER AT POLE. LAND CLAIMED FOR UNITED STATES. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. SYDNEY, February 28. The explorer, Mr Lincoln Ellsworth, today announced a new expedition to the Antarctic in 1941, when he will camp for the entire winter at the South Pole with two companions. “I will pursue observations of importance in several branches of scientific research,” he said. He is uncertain whether he will leave for the South Pole from Australia or from New Zealand. He will probably use two planes and dig them in at the Pole after a flight from the Bay of Whales, a distance of 700 miles. He pointed out that his leading subjects of research there would be meteorological conditions and the ionization of atmosphere layers. Mr Ellsworth added: “I also propose to name ‘American Highland’ the 81,000 square-mile hignly-elevated land south of Princess Elizabeth Land, over which I flew and which I claimed for the United States of America this year.”
