FRIENDLY SOCIETIES
IN DIFFICULT POSITION. NEW MEMBERSHIP FALLING AWAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, February 28. That nothing could be learnt of the Government’s social security intentions, repeated requests or enlightenment bringing evasive replies, was a statement ,by Mr J. K. Macfie, Dunedin secretary of the Ancient Order ol Foresters, who said it was almost impossible to enlist new members. The future of the friendly societies was.not hopeful. During the first year after the security announcement the new membership roll was down 56 per cent, while resignations and cancellations were even higher. The facts that disturbed members were their obligation to pay the full wage tax and the fear that the initial payment would later be increased.
