QUICKSTEP CONTEST
CONCLUSION OF BAND FESTIVAL; ST KILDA WIN A GRADE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 25. “Some of the playing was very fine indeed,” said the judge, Captain H. R. Shugg, commenting on the A and B grade quickstep events, which concluded the New Zealand brass bands’ championship contest at Addington Showgrounds this afternoon. St Kilda Municipal Band won the A grade and Ashburton Silver the B grade. “Quite a number of the bands, however, neglected to give proper expression to their music,” continued Captain Shugg, “though this is always a difficulty in a quickstep competition. I also noticed that some drummers failed to play their parts as written. On the whole, however, the playing was quite good and the marches chosen were very good selections.” The placings were:— .
