WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS HOLDERS RETAIN McVILLY SHIELD. MASTERTON SECURES COUNTRY. TROPHY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A record number of athletes competed in the Wellington provincial amateur athletic championship under ideal weather and track conditions at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. A Kitto Shield parade during the afternoon was swelled by the visiting clubs, of which Masterton had a big representation; The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon W. E. Parry,' took the salute and afterward addressed the athletes, officials and spectators. The Wellington Caledonian Socity Pipe Band headed the parade. The McVilly Challenge Shield, contested by the clubs in senior events only, was retained by Wellington, with 94 points. The other clubs scored the following points:—Kiwi, 30; Combined Old Boys, 19; Wairarapa Sub-centre, 18; Olympic, 16; University, 15; Hutt 6; Nelson, 2. . „ , Masterton won the McVilly Country Club Shield with 95 points. Nelson scored 18 points and Eketahuna 6. W. A. C. Pullar, the best of the milers, ran an undecided race. P. Bay, Wellington, was impressive. At the bell Pullar and Bay, exchanging the lead, were eight yards in front of Annear and Bartlett. After 120 yards Pullar went ahead and increased his lead. Bourgeois sprinted to beat Bartlett into third place. The placings were: Holder A. R. Wilson—W. A. C. Pullar, 1; P. Bay, 2; A. Bourgeois, 3. Time, 4.26 3-5. P L. Ryan (Masterton) was third in the third heat of the 100 yards senior; E C Martin was second in the first heat of the 100‘ yards junior, and A. Welply was second in the second heat of the 100 yards senior. Masterton were placed second in the one mile medley. Hausman, 21ft lin, was second in the senior broad jump and A. Curtis, 109 ft 2in, was second in the throwing the javelin junior. W. Russell won the junior and senior hop, step and jump, with 45ft OJin, and 44ft Ilin respectively.' 2_ RECORDS BROKEN. AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 26. Two records were broken and one was equalled at the Auckland provincial amateur athletic championship meeting on Saturday afternoon. The added attraction of a grand parade of about 3000 athletes, men and women, which was a fitting climax to the Physical Fitness Week campaign in the. city brought a large attendance. New figures created by C. L. Main in the putting the shot event, 40ft 3?in, bettered the previous best distance by A. Bissett in 1923 by 9jin. J. G. Leckie New Zealand representative at the Empire Games in Sydney last year, registered 151 ft lin in the hammer throw, a distance whieh substantially improved upon the record held by A. E. Sutton last year by nearly 30ft The pole vault record of 10ft 6in, registered by N. b. Beauchamp in 1935 and J. Fergsson in the following season was equalled by J. Alker. _____
