TENNIS RACKETS

INVENTED IN FRENCH TOWN. Villers-Cotterets, in the department of the Aisne, claims to be the place where tennis rackets were invented. The claim is based on correspondence exchanged between M. de Villeroi and M. de Bassompierre, in 1602. M. de Bassompierre wrote, “At Villers Cotterets I have just won my first game with a new instrument made of wood and strung with catgut, like the strings of a bass-viol, which is called a raquette.” The tennis courts of Villers-Cotterets existed from the beginning of the sixteenth century, but players up till that time struck the ball either with the open hand, with a gauntlet, or with a wooden instrument.
