Bible-in-Schools Movement.
More than 100,000 school children in New Zealand are either taking part in daily religious observance or weekly religious instruction or both, according to a report made to the Dominion Methodist Church conference in Christchurch by the Rev. E. O. Blamires. general secretary of the Biblc-in-Schools League in New Zealand. Mr Blamires said that the number 11 years ago was only 20,000. The confeience expressed appreciation of the action of the Government through the new Education Bill in seeking to give more definite statutory recognition to the work of religious instruction in primary schools and strongly urged the retention of facilities granted for daily voluntary religious observances. A carillon of 35 bronze bells, the largest weighing 1300 pounds, the smallest 15 pounds, is now being cast in Tournai, in Belgium, for the 150foot tower of the Belgian Exhibit Building at the New York World’s Fair, 1939. They are to be played daily during the Exposition. A clock in Berwickshire, the old stopping place for stage coaches, still indicates the time of departure of the stage-coach for Edinburgh.
