Subject to his passing a veterinary test, the three-year-old colt, Gay Son, will go to India to carry the colours of the Maharajah of Idar, for whom L. H. Hewitt trains. The colt was sold by the breeder and owner of the colt. Mi- A. F. M. Symes, Hawke’s Bay, through the agency of Mr, A. D. Potter, Auckland, who purchased GayTalkie on the Maharajah’s behalf. Last season, Gay Son won the Wellesley Stakes, and two-year-old handicaps at Masterton and Woodville, while he was second to Peerless in the Canterbury Welcome Stakes. This season Gay Son was third in the Wanganui Guineas and won the Great Northern Guineas, but was placed third for interference. On the following day he won the Liverpool Handicap. and, later, the Gothard Memorial Handicap at Woodville, the Members’ Handicap at Riccarton and the Clifford Plate at Ellerslie. At the Trentham meeting last month, he was unplaced in the Wellington Stakes and ran second to Lady Montana in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. He has started 24 times for seven wins, two seconds and five thirds, for £2260 in prize-money. He is by Beau Pere from La Moderne. Lord Quex Colt’s Owner, The yearling colt by Lord Quex from Seamstress, bought for 200 guineas at the Trentham sales last month, was secured by Miss P. Hartland, of Christchurch, for Mr F. R. Meehan, of Timaru. The youngster is being handled at Riccarton by F. Christmas,' who will train him for his new owner. Seamstress, the dam of the colt, is by Catmint from Slipstitch, and is a half-sister to Black Thread. Summerhill, Threadneedle (sire of winners in the’ Gisborne district), and Drop One (dam of Malagigi). It is not intended to race the youngster until late in the new season, and after being broken in he will probably be put aside for a period. Master Brierly. Master Brierly, who won the Herries Memorial Cup the year before last, is an acceptor again this year, and following his forward showing on either day at Te Rapa he will have to be taken into account. He carried 8.3 when he won narrowly before from the rear of the field so that with 7.12 he appears to have good prospects of repeating his achievement of 1937.

Team of Sixty-three. Captain C. Boyd-Rochfort, V.C., who has headed the list of winning trainers in England for the past two seasons, started this year with 63 horses in his stable. They were the property of-21 owners, and were'made up'of 11 four-year-olds, 22 three-year-olds, and 30 two-year-olds. The three-year-olds included the unbeaten Panorama and Foxbrough 11, the latter being favourite for the Derby. Taranaki Nominations. Nominations for the Taranaki Cup are as follows:— Tahurangi, Prince Rangi, Sergia, Cheval de Volee. Aussie Ra, Namara, Wotan, Red Sand, Rustem. Royal Choice. Oratory, Lexden, Smoke Screen, Millament, Varimond, Olympus, Fils de Vaals. Footloose. Gay Talkie’s Success. Advice has been received by Mr A. D. Potter fi'om the Maharajah of Idar, for whom he purchased Gay Talkie, that the horse won the Byculla Cup, one mile and three-quarters, at Bombay recently. To the Stud. The Night Raid mare Accomplice has been retired to the stud and she will be mated with the Blandford horse Bulandshar.
