OPAKI
SCHOOL SPORTS AND PICNIC. GATHERING ON RACECOURSE. 1 ("Times-Age" Special.) The Opaki School held its sports and picnic yesterday at the Masterton racecourse in ideal weather. A most enjoyable day was spent by all. Mr Buick and Mr T. Wyeth did the handicapping so well that every child won a prize before the day’s events were finished. The adult races resulted: Mrs T. Wyeth won Mrs Bourke’s trophy for the married ladies’ race and also the trophy for the nail driving competition. Miss Betty Welch won the trophy given by Mrs Bourke for the young ladies' race and Mr N. Wyeth won the prize for the married men's contest. Mr Douglas Buick was first in the young men’s race, and the popular teacher, Miss Hunter, won the trophy given by Messrs Whiteman Bros for guessing the correct distance between two pegs. The Opaki School Committee wishes to express its thanks to the Masterton Racing Club for allowing the gathering to be held at the course, also the caretaker, Mi- Gibbs, for the way he helped the committee to make the day the success it was.
