CARTERTON

SWIMMING CARNIVAL HELD LAST NIGHT. MOST SUCCESSFUL GATHERING I (“Times-Age” Special.) I Last evening saw a very large at- s tendance of the public at the weekly i carnival of the Carterton Swimming i Club. Prior to the commencement of j the evening’s programme the Mayor, 1 Mr D. L. Taverner, referred to the Government’s proposal of a Physical Fitness Week. He was mdeed pleased and so were the officials of the Swim- j ming Club to see such a large at- j tendance. It was also pleasing to know i that large numbers of children had ] taken the opportunity during this ] week to learn to swim under the < supervision of members of the Swim- ] ming Club. There was no doubt that swimming was an excellent exercise and kept those engaged in it very fit and that, with other sports, was what ’ was required to keep the nation fit. j The council had given the free use of j the baths during the Learn to Swim ■ Week and it was indeed pleaasing to j know that the Council’s efforts were . appreciated. This year the council had , filled the baths with fresh water from ( the high pressure service and although j this had been a tax upon the town j supply he was sure it was not regretted by any ratepayer. At some future time , it was hoped they would be able to make further improvements to the baths. He thanked all for their attendance and the interest shown in Physical Fitness Week. Thq carnival was a great success and the entries received totalled 103. Mr R. P. Wakelin acted as starter and the time keeper was Mr J. Manley. The executive, under the guidance of Messrs L. G.
