WISE MEN OF THE EAST

CURTOUS FRENCH CEREMONY. One of the most curious ceremonies connected with the New Year is ol the arrival of the Wise Mqn of the East celebrated every year at the church of Cannes —La Bocca. Eighty performers take part. Al nine o'clock, the doors of the church open to a strange procession in which the Wise Men of the East, having followed the star, make their way to the manger, surrounded by its burning candles, there to offer their gifts. They are followed by delegations representing different trades, the millers, the fishermen, the carpenters, the gardeners, the glass makers, the musical instrument makers, bakers, and washerwomen. The whole picturesque crowd is admitted to the choir, where the Wise Mon open caskets of incense, the offerings they have brought. A hymn Qf praise brings the strange but picturesque service to a dose.
