MAGISTRATE’S COURT
MONTHLY CARTERTON SITTING. POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at the monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court, held yesterday. For not carrying a warrant of fitness, Mrs Myrtle Moorcock was fined £1 and 10s costs, and for driving a motor-car without being the holder of a driver’s licence defendant was fined £ 1 and 10s costs. , z Miss Rebecca Judd was convicted and fined £2 and 12s costs for exceeding the speed limit in a restricted area. On a similar charge Mrs Emily Wakeley was fined 10s and 10s costs and H. Dixon £3 and 12s costs. “He said he was in a hurry to get back to his restaurant in Pahiatua,” said Traffic Inspector W. G. Milne, when Joseph David was charged with exceeding 30 miles an hour in the Carterton Borough. Defendant pleaded not guilty and during cross-examination he alleged that Inspector Milne had “been trying to get him.” When he was informed by Mr Lawry of the exact nature of the charge defendant said “Oh, I must plead guilty to that. I thought I was ' being charged with dangerous driving or with being a menace to the road.” Mr Lnwry: “If you had read your summons you would have known what the charge, was. You are fined £2 and 10s costs.” CIVIL BUSINESS. Judgment for plaintiff by default was > given in the following undefended civil * claims: H. Mortensen vR. Johnston, cla’m £3 3s 6d, costs £1 5s 6d; Carterten Borough Council v J. J. McMahon, claim. £ll 16s. costs £2 3s 6d; Watson and Co v S. Suckley, claim £2 12s lid; costs £1 12s 6d; W. Vaughan v L. Nimodt. claim £lO 12s Id, costs £2 16s. On a judgment summons, P. Burden was order to pay the Porangahau Trading Co, Ltd, the sum of £6 10s 6d in default 6 days’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so long as defendant pays 10s a week.
