Two years ago a paragraph in the Southland “News” mentioned the existence of a hen which had been left at Port Adventure, Stewart Island, by a prospective settler who later abandoned his quarters. Fishermen when hunting for deer in this open grassed country frequently saw the fowl but any attempt to catch it was always frustrated by its ability to fly away quite expertly like any wild bird. Recently the skeleton of the hen was found on top of a nest of eggs, it evidently having vainly tried to hatch out a brood and weakened itself to death in the attempt.
