CARTERTON
FITNESS WEEK FESTIVITIES. PROCESSION ON SATURDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday next Carterton will fall in line with other centres with the observance of the Keep Fit Week and a procession from Holloway Street to the Showgrounds will take place. The procession will comprise most sports bodies in the town and district. The parade will leave Holloway Street at 2 p.m. and will be marshalled by Mr Jas. Steele. Upon arrival at the Showgrounds at 2.30 p.m. the National Anthem will be sung by all An address will follow, after winch lolk dancing will take place. At 2.50 p.m. the Y.M.C.A. will give a gymnastic display. A tug-of-war between various teams and relay races for school children will follow. The programme will be concluded by a gymnastic play by the Y.M.C.A. The Wairarapa Scottish Pipe Band will provide the music during the proceedings at the Showgrounds while a public address system is to be installed to facilitate the announcement of the various events. The schools’ events has been left in the hands of the teachers. Ash Wednesday. Today is Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of the Lenten season, prior to Easter Sunday, which falls this year on April 9. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Longbush on Sunday next, at 2.30 p.m. Bowling. The Wellington Bowling Centre will play Wairarapa on the Featherston green on Sunday, March 12. Arrangements are in hand for the visit. Two games were played on the Carterton green on Monday as follow: Colts handicap singles: Boyne defeated A. Thompson, 21/12. In a handicap pairs game Robertson and Tucker (s) drew with Lynch and Larsen (s). 16H6. Pipe Band Social. There was a large attendance at a social evening held in the band room last evening in aid of the Pipe Band uniform fund. Mr T. S. Arcus was chairman and Mr Stan Hall acted as master of ceremonies for the dance programme, while Mrs Rogers of Dalefield kindly supplied the music. During the evening the following programme of vocal and other items were rendered: —Selection, Pipe Band; song, Mr McKinnon; recitation, Misses Beverley Goodin and Norma Tinsley; pianoforte solo, Miss O’Connor; Scotch dances, Master and Miss Corlet, of Martinborough; Scottish dance, Miss Mavis Geange; Irish jig and Dutch dance. Miss Grace Bradbury; pipe selections, Peter Fisher and Donald McPhee; song, Miss U. Pritchard; duet, Misses A. and C. Fisher. All the items were encored and the accompaniments were played by Misses C. Berrill, Hannah McPhee and Irwin. Supper was served by the ladies’ committee. TREES DESTROYED. FIRE IN PINE PLANTATION. Last evening a disastrous fire broke out in a valuable plantation of young pinus insignus trees on the property of Mr D. McCauley, West Taratahi. Thousands of trees were destroyed in the plantation, and but for the assistance of a large number of settlers who fought the flames, a house on the property would have been destroyed. Fortunately there was no wind or the results may have b.een very serious. BOY SCOUTS. COMMITTEE MEETING. The Carterton Scout Committee met in the Fire Brigade Hall last evening, Mr W. Gaze presiding over a fair attendance. A vote of thanks was accorded members who had prepared the building of Mr P. A. Cole in readiness for the training of Scouts. Mr Gaze submitted a report of the meeting he attended on February 1 regarding Fitness Week. It was decided that the Carterton Scout Troop and the Carterton and Gladstone Cub Packs take part in the proceedings on Saturday next. The arrangements for the transport of the Gladstone Pack were left to Mr Gaze. It was resolved to hold a social evening on March 7. Miss Edge and Mr Gaze offered to take charge of the supper arrangements at the next weekly euchre tournament. The next meeting will be held at the residence of Mi - E. G. White, Rhodes Street.
