CENTENNIAL MEMORIALS

MASTERTON ARRANGEMENTS. SUB-COMMITTEE SET UP. The Masterton Borough Council, at its meeting last night, approved of its allocation of £66 towards the cost ol the erection of a memorial hall and bathing pavilion on the Petone beach as a provincial centennial memorial. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, said he understood that the trees to be planted as a centennial memorial at the northern and southern entrances to the town had been ordered. The next step was to obtain an estimate of the cost of planting and properly protecting the trees. Mr Jordan made it clear that the Government would not subsidise loan moneys for projects as centennial memorials. A sub-committee consisting of the Park Committee ,the Mayor, and Councillors Kemp, Judd and Morice was .set up to discuss and arrange for suitable local centennial celebrations. The Borough Engineer was instructed to bring down an estimate of the cost of planting and protecting the trees to be planted at the entrances to the town.
