GREYTOWN

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL LOCAL CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL. 1 ■ REST ROOM PROPOSAL. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor. Mr A. W. Horton, presided at the monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors W. A. Tate. H. J. Nightingale, J. Farley, A. Stuart. G. F. Eager, H. Wood, I. Blissett and A. Balfour. Councillor H. Trotman was granted leave of absence. It was decided to approve of any restrictions imposed on motor cycles by the Transport Department in the interests of road safety. "As you know, our water pressure has been down to 401b5," remarked the Mayor, when referring to a complaint by a resident regarding the poor water supply, "but since we have been on the reservoir the pressure is back to 70 or 801bs.” The Greytown Swimming Club wrote stating that it would co-operate as far as possible in connection with Learn to Swim week. The baths would be made available free to instructors and pupils. The Masterton County Council advised that the borough's allocation of heavy traffic fees for the past quarter amounted to £49 17s 4d, as compared with £44 4s Id for the corresponding quarter of last year. Referring to Keep Fit Week, the Mayor said that he had called a public meeting to consider the question of setting up a district committee and only four attended, however, and it was decided that it was a “wash-out.” The action of the Mayor in agreeing, at a recent district conference, to the council’s allocation of £8 towards the cost of erecting a memorial hall and bathing pavilion on Potone beach as a Provincial Centennial Memorial was confirmed. Mr Horton said that there was no chance of securing a Government subsidy towards the cost of erecting a Rest Room as a local centennial memorial unless the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union agreed to vest the building in the council. The division already had about? £4OO in hand, and it had been estimated that the Rest Room would cost about £6OO or £7OO. Councillor Tate said he thought the council should assist the Women’s Division .as much as possible as a Rest Room was urgently needed in the town. Mr Horton said that if they were going to have a local memorial the RestRoom was the project that 1 should be carried out.

Councillor Balfour said a Rest Room was urgently needed. It was decided to hold the matter over until the Women’s Division made known its decision. No action was taken in the meantime regarding the holding of local centenial celebrations The Health Department wrote stating that it had no objection to Mr H. A. Truman acting as the borough building inspector in return for half the building permit fees collection. Mr Horton said that half the foes would only amount to about 30s or £2 a year. The Pahiatua Borough wrote asking the council .to support a remit to the Municipal Conference urging that an annual charge be made for water supply instead of the present rate on the annual value of the properties. The Mayor said he did not think the council 'could support the remit. He had glanced at the first page of the rate book and 15 of the 16 ratepayers would have their water rates increased by 30s a year if the suggested change were brought into force, while another, man would pay £1 6s more. Two of three business firms would pay an additional £1 and £1 9s. A Greytown garage would pay an increased water rate of £3 18s 3d. If the rest of the residents were on a par with those on the first page of the rate book, rates would be increased by an average' of £1 to £1 10s. Councillor Tate said no complaints had been received from ratepayers concerning their water rates. It was .decided to receive the Pahiatua letter. "I think it is the worst fenced cemetery in New Zealand,” stated Councillor Stuart when a complaint was received that sheep were wandering in the cemetery.. The mallei- was referred to I lie cemetery committee with a view to having lhe fences repaired.
