CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS. LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The quarterly summoned meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge. Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows, was held last evening, Bro.'A. R. Tankersley, N.G., presiding overia large attendance of members. Two members declared on the sick funds of the lodge and two were reported to be able to follow their respective occupations. Accounts amounting to £l9 6s 3d were passed for payment, including £lO 6s 8d sick pay. The District Secretary forwarded the business paper for the Annual District Conference to be held at Sister Wallis Lodge Room, Wellington, on Saturday, March 4; also the agenda for the 1939 M.C. to be held at Auckland on Monday, March 20. The lodge balance sheet for the year ended 1933 was submitted to the meeting and adopted, showing the funds to be as follows: —Balance as at November 30, 1938: Liabilities: Sick and Funeral Fund cr., £7367 Is lid; Management Fund cr., £l2O 13s 2d; Medical Fund cr., £47 3s sd; Distress Fund cr., £147 18s 9d; Surplus Fund cr., £424 13s lid; Social Fund cr., £ll 3s 3d. Assets: Mortgage, £3334- Government Stock and Debentures, £2694 Os 3d; District Loan Fund, £lO9l ss; Land and Buildings, £5Ol 10s 7d; Post Office Savings Bank, £4Ol Is; Bank of New Zealand, £42 7s 6d. • Bro. G. S. Bruce was appointed, to represent the lodge at the Annual District Conference on March 4. Bros. L. H. Smart and H. A. McPhee were reappointed lodge auditors for i the ensuing year. , Sister Eagle was appointed warden, and Bro. Gooding and Sister Mitchell right and left supporter to the V.G.. respectively. The agenda paper for the District Conference was discussed and it was decided that the delegate be given a free hand in all business. It was resolved to apply to the District for ihe appropriation of such surplus as is available, firstly, £lOO to the Management Fund and the balance for the reduction of contributions to all members of five years standing and over. The result, says the actuary, is a surplus of £1,854 as against £1,437 al the previous valuation. After ‘allowance had been made for surplus appropriation of £1,084 during the period it would be seen that the net improve- : ment amounted to £1,501. The sickness experienced during the quinquemium ' was a total 2,31(1 weeks, costing £1,305, whilst the amount expected by the ' tables employed in the valuation was 2,167 weeks, costing £1,348. The ex- ■ perience. was, therefore, favourable to - the extent of £43. It was resolved that a ritual practice be held on Thursday week in preparation of annual ritual examination. Those members who have not paid their lodge dues are asked to do so to save suspension from benefits. Road Improvement. Good progress,is being made by the Wairarapa South County workmen who are engaged on the Dalefield Road from the Main Highway to the State 1 School, preparatory to sealing this 1 stretch of roadway. I 1 Personal. j Mr R. Strang's friends will regret to learn that he has found it necessary to , enter Croydon Hospital for treatment. ( Mr and Mrs B. Wadham were visitors , to Carterton yesterday. It is twenty- j six years ago since Mr -Wadham left Carterton to take up farming 'in the Waikato district. He is now benefiting , from the fruits of his labours and is z living a retired life m Auckland, but , stiff retains an interest in his dairy farm at Waikato. Several years ago ; Mr B. Orchard Robbers. During the heavy gale that raged in Carterton on Saturday some sneak thief robbed an orchard at South Carterton. Among the fruit stolen was that from a very heavily laden nectarine tree, the fruit from which was going to be used by the housewife fc». bottling purposes. The matter has been reported to the police. Farewell Evening. A most pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs G. T. Smith. Tyne Street. Carterton. when Die opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr W. E. Ellis, of the stall' of Mr W. Vaughan, by the stall's of Messrs Vaughan and Deller. Mr Ellis, who has been employed in the butchery trade in Carterton for the past 14 years left Carterton, with his wife and family for Kaponga where he will take charge of a well established business. Mr Ellis has made many friends during his residence in Carterton and he will be greatly missed in many ways. The evening was occupied by games, song and story and at a suitable interval in the proceedings Mr W. Vaughan made a presentation of an electric kettle to the departing guest. Mr Vaughan said they were all very sorry to have to bid adieii to Mr Ellis who had been a faithful servant and a good citizen. The kettle was given on behalf of those assembled and Mr Vaughan’s personal gift was a wristlet watch. Other members of both staffs added their congratulations and best wishes to Mr Ellis in his new sphere i of labour. Mr Ellis returned thanks for the plea- i sant remarks and the gifts given him and said he was reluctantly leaving Carterton and his many friends. ] Invalid Lady. j Mrs Birdsall, molner of Mrs J. Newbould, High Street, Carterton, who 1 is 79 years of age and who has been ' bed-ridden for many years, was taken to Wellington yesterday to see her ' son-in-law. say the journey but finally left by air and landed in New Plymouth one hour and a half after leaving Wellington. The old lady was communicated with by telephone later in the day and said she had been greatly thrilled by her first journey in the air.
