MASTERTON SAVAGE CLUB
ANNUAL PICNIC. AN ENJOYABLE OUTING. During the weekend the Masterton Savage Club held their annual picnic at Mr J. Payton’s bush, the Club being again indebted to Mr Payton for the use of his splendid grounds, which, combined with the beautiful weather, made an ideal spot for a real “Keep Fit Day.” . Under the leadership of the Chief Savage "Cook” Jenkins and helped, with the usual thoroughness, by the Club’s executive, members, their families and friends numbering nearly 200, spent a most enjoyable day with field games, swimming sports and competitions. There was not a dull moment, and things.were kept going with the spirit of goodfellowship peculiar to all the Savage Club activities. All present voted it “A day fit to keep a keep fit day.” The winners of the various events were:— Children’s race, under 5 years: Shirley Ingley I, Max Handcock 2. Girl’s race, 6—10: Ronda Brown 1, Elizabeth Bishop 2. Boy's race: A. Kennedy 1, J. Gordon 2. Ladies’ dressing and undressing race: Miss Snaddon 1, Mrs Garrett 2, Mrs Clarke 3. Men’s dressing and undressing race: Savage Hessell 1, Savages Clarke and Marshall tie 2. ‘ Girls’ race: June Cooper 1, Moira Phillips 2, Leona Moore 3. Boys’ race: Kerslake 1, Kerins 2. Chain stepping (ladies): Mrs Handcock 1, Mrs Barber 2. Men’s chain stepping: Savage Bill Russell 1, Savage Alec Pickering 2. Estimating correct length of rope: Mrs Cottle (Byds, 20in) 1, Mrs Price (Byds, 19in) 2. (Correct length Syds 21’. in.) Corfu diving: Keeling (Wellington) 1, Handcock (Masterton) 2. Retrieving plates: Leona Moore 1, Mrs McKenzie (Wellington) 2. Diving (men): J. Handcock 1, Keeling 2. Diving (women): Norma Brown 1. Mrs McKenzie 2. Three-legged race: Savage Mick Curtain and partner 1. Stan Moore and partner 2. Three-legged race (light weights): Younquist and Pal Clarke 1, Handcock and Peggy Smith 2. Golf ball driving: Savage Kennedy 1, Savage Hemmingson 2, Savage HancLcock 3. The supplying of hot water for, lea making was under the able direction of Pat Handcock and Harry Burgess, assisted by Bill Perry. A popular rendezvous was a refreshment stall.and lorry where free ice creams and soft drinks were served to all.
