UNSTABLE MAMET

VALUES AT YESTERDAY’S RAM FAIR GOOD TIME FOR BUYERS. PRICES BELOW EXPECTATIONS. The element of instability that has appeared ai recent stock sales and B i'aii ■ was again in evidence at me Iviasterlon A. and P Association's annual rain fair at Solway Show ground:, yesmrdav. The sale was a buyer’s paradise r inn even so passings were the rule <- rather than the exception. Admittedly, r the offering included some cuil or in- t fm’ior animals, but even so the fail ? must be regarded as a most disappoint- 1 ing one. The catalogue of flock Romneys was - large, probably too large, and buyers. 5 operating within definitely restricted I’mits had the opportunity of picking a and choosing their requirements. It was 1 only when two or three on the benches t had decided on the same pens that bid- - ding became at all animated. For the \ mos/ part the sale was a dreary pro- - cession and in the closing stages the \ overworked auctioneers had the utmost rdifficulty in dragging even the mini- , mum bid of one guinea out of the apparently uninterested bench of buyers Prices throughout fell short, of those , realised las! year and generally speaking it was poor day for all but a few of ( the vendors. Many good sheep sold 1 well, but a considerably bigger properlion did not. TODAY’S SELLING OFFERING OF SOUTHDOWNS. IMPROVED MARKET TONE. The benches were only lightly filled this morning when the Masterton A. and P. Association’s annual ram fair was resumed at Solway Showgrounds. The market opened with an offering of flock. Southdown rams, the numbers of which were almost 200 in excess of last year's yarding. In recent weeks close on 2,000 flock rams have been sent to northern districts and it is anticipated that the demand today will be keen and sustained. Mr H. .1. .Andrew, the well-known South Island breeder, averaged over 15 gns for his first line of 8 rams. Following are prices up to the time of going to press (the sheep being oneshear except where otherwise stated): There was a considerably better tone about today’s sale and up to lunch time the market for flock Southdowns was buoyant and prices averaging out a little in excess of vendors’ expectations. A shortage of flocks, combined with the good quality of the rams, contributed to making it a good sale. FLOCK SOUTHDOWNS. Account W. H. Corfield: 2 at Glgns, 1 at 7gns, E. B.
