BOWLING

CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Green Committee of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre has decided that the singles championship will be played on the Masterton green, commencing on Saturday next. A fortnight later the pairs championship will be started on the Martinborough green and in another fortnight’s time the rinks championship will commence on the Carterton green. MASTERTON CLUB. TAYLOR WINS SINGLES. (Notes by “The Bowler.”) The final of the champion singles was played yesterday afternoon between V. Taylor and E. Reid, and after a most interesting game was won by V. Taylor. The green played well, but was not as fast as the previous evening, when the semi-finals were completed. A large number of bowlers witnessed the game, and were not disappointed, as the two finalists gave a fine exhibition of bowling. Both were drawing well, but Taylor made more use of the upshot than his opponent. Only a few points separated the players during the whole game. On the fourth head the scores were equal, 5 all. At the 9th head Taylor had a lead of 4 points, the board showing Taylor 12, Reid 8. Reid drew well during the next 4 heads, and at the 13th head had reduced Taylor’s lead to one point.

Taylor had a lead of 2 points at the 16 head, but on the 18th head the scores were Taylor 18, Reid 17. On the 19th head Taylor scored 2 points, and increased his lead to 3 points, leaving him 3 up with two heads to go. Reid scored a single on the 20th head, still leaving Taylor 2 up and one head to play. Reid failed to obtain the necessary points and the final scores were —Taylor 23, Reid 18. I congratulate Taylor on his fine performance, and also Reid on his steady play throughout the competition.

Taylor will now represent lhe Masterton Club in the Wairarapa champion of champions singles, which commences on Saturday next. I wish him the best of luck and may he bring back honours to himself and the Masterton Club.
