SHEEP

SOUTHDOWN (OPEN). Mr J. Webb, of Taihape, who judged the open Southdowns, said that although the entries were not very numerous the quality was good. The top line sheep in most of the classes were quite outstanding specimens of the breed. Right throughout, however, there was a tendency for some of the sheep to have wool that was not typical of Southdown sheep. In one or two classes there was a variety of type and a few of the sheep were inclined to be too much off the ground. The champion ram was a very thick good type of ram and was fit to head any pedigree stock in New Zealand. The champion and reserve champion ewes were very nice Southdowns.

PIGS

BACONERS & PORKERS. The judge of baconers and porkers, Mr L. L. Lovelock, Palmerston North, said the first class was not really good as baconers, the majority carrying rather too much condition. There was hardly a pig among them of the type required for the bacon market today. In the porker class the first pig was ideal and as good as any in the Show. This was a much better class he said. Both pairs, the heavy and lighter porkers, were very good classes indeed, the first prize pair being outstanding. The light porkers were a very even lot, and there was not much difference between the first three pens. On the whole, considering that Masterton was not really a dairying district, breeders were responding very well to the requirement of the business which needed a different type from what was required a few years ago. The standard generally was very good in all the breeds. There was very good stuff here and local breeders should be encouraged. .
