SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

DEPUTATION WAITS ON MEMBER. (“Times-Age” Special.) Yesterday afternoon Mr B. Roberts, M.P. for Wairarapa, receive,d a deputation from the Greytown School Committee. Matters in connection with the proposed extra accommodation at the District High School were explained to Mr Roberts. The deputation also brought under the notice of Mr Roberts the fact that the new staffing regulations were against the interests of the Greytown school. After making an inspection of the school Mr Roberts promised to bring the matter discussed before the Minister of Education. Obituary. The death occurred at the Greytown Hospital last evening of Mr John Workman, foreman of the Greytown Borough Council. The late Mr Workman was the sixth son of the late Mr William Workman and was born at Kaikoura 60 years ago. He came to the Wairarapa over forty years ago. In his young days he was a very keen athlete, taking part in every kind of sport. As a Rugby footballer he was well known and wore the Wairarapa representative jersey against the British team some years ago and on several occasions, “Jack,” as he was popularly known to most people, was. the oldest member of the Greytown Fire Brigade. He joined the brigade in 1898 and served right up to the time of his death. As a fire-fighter he was looked upon as one of the best in the province. His courage was an inspiration to young firemen. His death will be mourned right throughout the fire service of New Zealand. As borough foreman he has served the town well. His happy disposition and courtesy made him a popular citizen with all. He is survived by his widow, two sons, William and Clarence, and two daughters, Mrs Downs and Mrs J. Lyford. His mother is also still alive. He will be tendered a fireman’s funeral.
