N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS.
SMITH WINS SINGLE SCULLS.

All that was required to make the 1939 New Zealand championship rowing regatta an outstanding success was good weather. The entries were a record and so was the prize-money, but the weather did not do its part. Water conditions were bad all day on Saturday, and it was possible to hold only three of the championship races, the others being postponed till today. Results: —
Champion Fours. Two miles —Clifton, 1; Union (Wanganui), 2; Star, 3. Time, 11.57.
Champion Eights. Two miles.—Union (Wanganui), 1; Tauranga, 2; Picton, 3. Time 12.42 2-5.
Champion Singles. One mile and a half—R. B. Smith, 1; P. Abbott, 2; T. Hegglun, 3. Time, 10.15 2-5. Champion Pairs. One and a half miles. —Union (Christchurch), 1; Clifton, 2; Blenheim, 3. Time, 9.15 2-5. Champion Double Sculls. One and a half miles. Petone, 1; Auckland, 2; Union (Christchurch). 3. Time 8.41 4-5. Marlborough Plate. One and a half miles.—Aramoho, 1; Petone, 2; Awarua. 3. Time 9.14 4-5.
Welterweight Junion Fours. One mile.—Star, 1; Blenheim, No. 1,2; Union (Wanganui), 3. Time 5.57. Junior Fours (open). One and a half miles.—Star, 1; Avon, 2; Tauranga, 3. Youths’ Fours. —Wairau No. 1, -1; Blenheim No. 1,2; Union (Wanganui), 3.
