MANAWATU BEAT WAIRARAPA MATCH AT MASTERTON. HAWKSWORTH MAINTAINS FORM. Playing in an inter-association tennis match at the Masterton Club's courts on Saturday. Manawatu defeated Wairarapa by 16 matches (36 sets, 301 games) to 8 matches <23 sets, 243 games). Play for a period in the afternoon was affected somewhat by the wind. One of the best exhibitions of tennis ever seen on the courts was that witnessed in the men’s singles contest between P. Hawksworth and Dr Chisholm. The game was characterised by hard-hitting by both players. The Wairarapa player seemed to have the lead all the way through and well maintained his recent tournament form. Following are the results. EXHIBITION MATCH. HAWKSWORTH AND EDWARDS. A specially arranged exhibition match will take place at Miramar next Sunday between P. Hawksworth, North Island singles champion, and N. V. Edwards, the national title holder. Edwards leaves for England on Thursday week to represent New Zealand in the Davis Cup competition. Hawksworth is playing at the top of his form and should be quite capable of fully extending his stylish opponent. The match has been arranged by the Wellington Tennis Association. INTER=CI.UB MATCHES 1 A GRADE. A WIN FOR MARTINBOROUGH. Martinborough defeated Carterton in an A grade match played at Martinborough on Saturday. B GRADE COMPETITION. MEMORIAL BEAT Mt BRUCE. The Memorial B team met the Mt Bruce team, on the Mt Bruce courts on Saturday afternoon. Memorial had a winning lead of 15 matches to 6 when darkness set in and prevented the completion of the remaining three matches.
