Visitors to Eketahuna at the weekend from Carterton were agreeably surprised at the freshness of the country after leaving Mount Bruce. The country in the Bush District is remarkably green and fresh, in fact in some places along the main highway grass has only just been cut for hay. While the pastures in the Eketahuna and other districts to the north are fresh and green, the Wairarapa countryside is parched for want of rain. The comparison is very noticeable, PAHIATUA SHOW. SUCCESSFUL DALEFIELD EXHIBITORS. Messrs Martin Parker and Les. Gallon, of Dalefield, were successful exhibitors at the Pahiatua Agricultural Show held on Saturday. Both exhibitors were showing Holstein cattle, and the competition was good. Mr Parker’s successes were champion cow, reserve champion bull, seven first prizes, three seconds and one third. Mr Gallon received awards asunder: Champion bull, reserve champion cow and two first prizes. The stock is now at Masterton in readiness for the show which is being held at Solway on Wednesday and Thursday. Gorse Fire at Woodside. Grave fears were felt for the safety of the Matarawa bridge on Saturday morning. During the past few days gorse fires have been burning on the plains near .Woodside. On Saturday morning the wind fanned the flames and the fire spread with startling rapidity through the grass and gorse until it reached the vicinity of the wooden bridge across the Waiohine River, where fortunately it ran itself out. but not until it had burnt large areas of grass and gorse.
