FROZEN MEAT TRADE
LONDON QUOTATIONS LAMB MARKET QUIET. CHILLED BEEF PRICES EASIER. Lamb market: Downs unchanged, others slightly lower. Heavy Australian stocks tending to depress market. Mutton market: Wethers and ewes, demand showing improvement but values unchanged. Beef market: Chilled beef, with heavier Dominion arrivals prices shade easier. New Zealand porker pigs: Trade slow, prices unchanged. New Zealand baconer pigs: Prices unchanged, but tendency is easier owing to weaker bacon market.
The above cabled report was received yesterday by the Meat Board from its London office, which advises that the following are the ruling prices of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of frozen meat mentioned and are for representative parcels of the goods sold on Thursday. Chilled beef prices are averages of the week. All prices a’re on the basis of delivered to Smithfield market. Prices for the previous week are shown in parentheses: — New Zealand sheep.—Crossbred wethers and/or maiden ewes: 481 b and under, 4 5-8 d (5 4-8 d); 491 b to 561 b, 3|d (3.]d); 571 b to 641 b, 33d (33d); 651 b to 721 b, 3.3 d (3i|d). Ewes: 481 b and under, 27-8 d (27-8 d 491 b to 561 b, 2Jd (2Jd); 571 b to 641 b, 2Jd (2Jd); 651 b to 721 b, 23-8 d (23-8 d New Zealand Lambs—Canterbury: Not quoted. -North Island Downs: 361 b and under, 7id (7£d); 371 b to 421 b, 7’d (7£d); 431 b to 501 b, 7 l-8d (7 l-8d); second quality, average about 301 b, 7 3-8 d (7 3-8 d). Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated February 9:— Frozen meat quotations (prices on a “delivered” basis, i.e„ including storage charges, cartage, market tolls, etc ). —North Island Down lambs, 28/36 lbs, 7 3-8 d per lb; 36/421bs, 7 3-Bd. Best North Island xbd lambs, 28/361bs, 7jd; 36/421bs, 7 J >d. North Island 2nd quality lambs av. 30/311bs, 7d. Best North Island wether sheep, under 481bs, 4 5-Bd' 48/561bs, 3ifd; 56/641bs, 3Jd; 64/72 Ims, 33d. North Island ewes, under 48 lbs, 27-8 d; 48/56’s, 2Jd; 56/64’s, 21d; 64/72’s, 2 3-Bd. N.Z. prime ox beef, 160/2201b5, none offering. Compared with last week’s quotations, lamb, all grades, is l-8d per lb lower, but others are unchanged. The market is quiet all round.
