THE OPERA HOUSE
NOT AVAILABLE FREE TO ANY SOCIETY. TRUST GRANT TO COLLEGE PIPE BAND. The Saint Andrew Society wrote to the Trust Lands Trust at its meeting last night asking that the Opera House be made available free of charge for a concert to be held on February 13, as all the net taking were to be in aid of the Wairarapa College Pipe Band Contest Fund. The society also asked the Trust to make a donation towards the cost of sending the College Pipe Band to Christchurch to compete in the Dominion contest.
Dealing with the first request, the chairman, Mr H. P. Hugo, said he opposed in any way making the Opera House available free to any society for any purpose whatever. If they did that they would be faced with applications from all sorts of societies.
Mr R. Krahagen: "Is there not a resolution on the books to that effect?” Mr J. Macfarlane Laing: “Yes." It was decided unanimously not to grant the Opera House free of rent. Mr Hugo, making reference to the request for a grant, said the lads were getting on very well, and deserved some encouragement. If the Trust could help the Pipe Band, he said, it would be a tine gesture on the Trust’s part.
It was pointed out that the charge for the Opera House would be £3 plus about £2 for lighting, etc. The Trust decided to make a grant of sgns.
