ROAD FATALITY
MAN KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR ON HUTT ROAD.
FIRST DEATH SINCE DECEMBER 5.

Wellington's long period of freedom from road fatalities ended this morning when Phil Commons, of 25 Sydney Street, Petone. was knocked down by a car on the Hutt Road and suffered a fracture of the base of the skull, from which he died in the public hospital* an hour and a half later. Commons, who was employed on housing work in Onslow Road had alighted' from a bus with another man and ran in front of the bus, making for the other side of the road. He was struck by a car coming from Petone. His companion escaped injury. The fatality brought down the city’s road safety pennant, which had been flying since December 5.
