THE CENTENNIAL

MEETING OF.WAIRARAPA REPRESENTATIVES.

NO DISTRICT CELEBRATION

Representatives of district local bodies from Pahiatua to Martinborough attended a meeting in Masterton yesterday when centennial memorial proposals were discussed.

The Mayor of Masterion, Mr T. Jordan, presided. The meeting, after a full discussion, approved of a proposal that the Wellington Provincial Memorial be a swimming pavilion and hall on the Petone beach, and it also agreed to the proposed allocation of the total cost. £lO,000. less a Government subsidy. The Wairarapa allocations were as follow: Akitio County, £8; Carterton Borough £l3: Castlepoint County, £4; Eketahuna County. £4; Eketahuna Borough. £5; Masterton Borough, £6O; Masterton County, £22; Mauriceville County, £5; Pahiatua County, £l9; Pahiatua Borough, £ll. Wellington City is to provide £3OOO, and the Hutt Valley, £lOOO. The meeting considered that the allocation was a most reasonable one. The allocation is based on a population basis, and is to be found either by public subscription, or out of rate receipts. There is to be no district centennial celebration, but each local body is to decide on its own particular form of celebration, and fix a date. The question of the renovating Maori meeting houses at Te Ore Ore and Papawai as centennial memorials wak considered. Mr Jordan pointed out that the Government would not recognise such work as a centennial memorial, when considering the matter of granting subsidies. It was decided to commend to the public the suggestion of repairing the meeting houses. The Maoris, it was hoped, would do something themselves to raise funds for the work.
