The Hon. A. Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, left Wellington for the South Island by the interisland express steamer last night. The Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister or Agriculture, will leave Wellington tonight for the Waikato. He will return to Wellington on Sunday.

Messrs H. M. Christie and P. Kearir.s, junior, have been appointed members of the board of governors of Massey Agricultural College. A few days ago Mr Brian Barrer, of Masterton, met with a motor car accident ini Christchurch, his vehicle being crushed between two tram cars. He escaped with a few bruises. Mr F. E. McCallum, manager of the Regent and Cosy Theatres has received notice of his transfer to Nelson. Mr McCallum will leave for Nelson early in March.

Captain F. J. McWhinnie (N.Z. Army Service Corps) of the Land and Income Tax Department, Wellington, has been appointed equipment officer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force with the rank of flying officer, and will commence his new duties about the middle of this month. Flying-Officer F. J. McWhinnie was a former pupil of the Wairarapa College.

After a long illness, the death occurred on Tuesday of James Louis Frayne Boyes, who, for the past 1 20 years, had been well known in Government and commercial circles throughout the Dominion. Born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and possessing marked histrionic ability and fine literary tastes, he was, before coming to New Zealand, assistant to the Professor of Elocution at Glasgow University, and widely known in Scottish theatrical circles. He leaves a wife and son.

A well-known resident of Petone for 57 years. Mrs Jemima Cargill died suddenly at her home, 24 Buick Street, Petone, on Wednesday. Born in the Shetland Islands nearly 78 years ago, Mrs Cargill came to New Zealand at the age of 17. She and her husband, the late Mr Martin Cargill, were among the pioneers of early Petone and opened the first bakery in the town. Mrs Cargill was also an enthusiastic and valued member of the Presbyterian Church in Petone.

The appointment of Mr W. G. McClymont. a teacher in the Otago Boys’ High School, Dunedin, as a member of the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation, was announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, last night. Mr McClymont fills the position on the council vacated by Dr. C. E. Hercus, Dean of the Medical Faculty of Otago University, who is leaving for England. Mr McClymont has taken an important part in the organisation of sporting activities at the Otago Boys’ High School. He is the coach of the Otago University Rugby team. He has a master of arts degree with first-class honours in history, and for a time was lecturer in that subject in Otago University.
