CUTWORM RAVAGES

ENTOMOLOGIST’S SERVICES RECOGNISED. OTTAWA. For discovering an effective method of controlling the ravages of the pale Western cutworm which formerly caused heavy damages to crops over a large area in the Canadian prairies, Howard L. Seamans, Government entomologist, has been presented with the gold medal of the Professional Institute of the Civil Service of Canada. The presentation was made at the annual meeting of the Institute on November 28 in the presence of the Prime Minister of Canada. The medal is only presented to Canadians who have made the most outstanding contribution to science in the year. Mr Seamans was born in Wauwasota, Wisconsin, United States, and came to Canada in 1921 to take charge of the Dominion Entomological Laboratory at Lethbridge, Alberta. Last year the Professional Institute medal was presented to the discoverer of a new strain of rust-resisting wheat.
