GREYTOWN
SCHOOL COMMITTEE. I MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School Committee was held last night. There were present Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman), F. Dennes (treasurer), E. Graham, H. Bassett, J. Herod. W. G. K. Wiggins and Mrs Knell (secretary). It was decided to send a letter of congratulations to Mr H. E. Webster on his promotion, and convey to him the committee’s appreciation of his services during his three years as headmaster of the school. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £9 12s lid.
A sub-committee was appointed to interview Mr B. Roberts, member for the district, in reference to accommodation in the Secondary Department. The ornamental trees which have been reared in the school gardens are to be offered to the Beautifying Society for planting along the entrance to the hospital. It was reported that between three thousand and four thousand other trees had been grown.
The acting headmaster (Mr G. S. Maloney) reported that the roll numbers were: Primary 296, secondary 40. During the month special classes had been arranged for swimming, first aid and life saving. It was found that there were 160 children at school who could not swim. This number would be considerably reduced before the end of the month. Five new typewriters had been added to the Secondary Department. Twenty-seven 5-year-old children had been admitted to the school, this being the largest number for many years. The school will observe a full holiday for the "Peoples’ Day” of the Mastertori Show.
