GOOD RECORD
FREEDOM FROM DRUNKENNESS IN MASTERTON. ONLY 17 CONVICTIONS IN YEAR. It is of interest to note that during the whole of last year there were only 17 convictions for drunkenness at the Masterton Police Court and in the previous year there were 13. During the last Christmas and New Year period only one man was brought before the Court in Masterton for drunkenness. These figures indicate the freedom from drunkenness apparent in Masterton streets, a matter that has been the subject of comment by many visitors to the town. A resident of Masterton, referring to a recent statement appearing in a Wellington paper regarding the collection of bottles in Masterton, points out that the figures published proyide no evidence at all as to the amount of intoxicating liquor consumed in Masterton. Although a certain number of bottles may be collected in six weeks, there is no indication whatever as to the period during which these bottles may have been brought to Masterton. If a comparison were possible with the amount of liquor sold over the average hotel bar, he said, it would be found that there was no excessive quantity consumed in Masterton. In fact, he was sure there was less drinking in Masterton than in many other towns of similar size.
