BLACK THREAD IS GOOD CLASS
(By
“The Cynic.”)
Black Thread is triton among the minnows in the sprint classes at the small meetings, and there was no more impressive winner at Wairoa last week that this Mimetic gelding, who carried 9.9 like a tradesman and won the President’s Handicap from end to end. The performance will make him a strong favourite for the Sunderland Stakes at Gisborne on Thursday. While he has proved up to metropolitan company in the past, Black Thread just fails to be a top-class sprinter, and he was eclipsed at Trentham last month after his good double at the Manawatu meeting. However, he has been a good winner for Mr D. J. Barry, and there should be several more seasons of usefulness in him.
Black Thread is by Mimetic (Comedy King—Joyeuse, by Bayardo) from the English-bred mare Slipstitch (dam of Te Ngira, Lockstitch, Threadneedle, Seamstress and Summer Hill,) by Henry the First from Quickstick, by Ladas. Black Thread is bred to run out a middle distance and should be a hard horse to beat this week at Gisborne.
Improved Gelding. Settlement appeared to meet with some ill-luck during the middle stages of the Halswell Hack Handicap on Saturday, and his third placing was accordingly very creditable. He has furnished into a solid four-year-old, and some good stakes should come his way during the autumn. His next racing will be at Wingatui this week.
Bred to Stay. Prudent Prince, winner of the Lyttelton Plate, was purchased by Messrs Barlow, of Christchurch, at the 1938 Trentham sales for. 450 guineas. The dam, Squeeze, is a sister to Cuddle and half-sister to Padishah, all being
from the Martian mare Caress. Prudent Prince has not been overdone with racing and, bred as he is, there is every reason to expect him to develop into a high-class performer. Spartan. t Spartan fought out a good finish with Improvident in the Trial Stakes, and both three-year-olds shaped as if they will again do well in the future. Spartan is a three-year-old by Iliad from Dame Straightlace.
Trench Fight. Trench Fight was again “on his toes” when in the ' birdcage for the Midsummer Handicap, and broke out into a lather of sweat. He nevertheless set a solid pace and beat them bar Queen of Song. Trench Fight rac-
ed with his tongue tied down, a practice which was not allowed in his races at Auckland and Wellington. Moorsotis. Moorsotis, the winner of the Middle Park Plate, is a big colt, still a bit green, and should improve with time and exprience. He was got by Myosotis from Moorbird, by The Ace — Moorfowl, by Autumnus —Kirriemuir, by Clanranald —Madowla, by Trenton from Azalia, and so has a good staying pedigree on both sides of the house. Myosotis was got by Phalaris —Scarlet Martagon, by Torpoint—Lily of the Valley, by Martagon—Hamptonia, by Hampton. Impressive Work. Scold, runner-up to Prudent Prince : in the Lyttelton Plate, was purchased in the spring from her breeder, Mr G. 1 Aynsley, by Mr G. R. Macdonald at a good figure, and her attractive effort J on Saturday indicated that she will j soon repay her outlay. She is by Myo- < sotis from Berate, by Silverado from Reproachful, dam of Chide and Chid- 1 den. ‘
