GREYTOWN

CHANGE IN WEATHER CONDITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Rain commenced to fall in Greytown last evening and continued at intervals during the night and again this morning, about 15 points in all being registered. The rain will freshen the pastures, but is not sufficient to do any real good. A cold southerly wind is blowing this morning. Old Landmark Disappears. West Street, Greytown, was a centre of interest all day yesterday, when one of Greytown’s well-known big trees was cut down. This old blue gum, which has stood for just over 70 years on the property of the late Mi - Sam Haigh, has been admired by many people. The two great limbs which towered to about 140 feet, have been the cause of anxiety to those living opposite the tree. Members of the staff of Messrs C. E. Daniell Ltd, of Masterton, undertook the task of felling the tree, and all day long theii- efforts were watched by an interested crowd. Just before 2 p.m. the big trunk was brought down, with the aid of a wire rope, and a tractor. The second limb created a bigger problem, as it had a lean to the east across the road and electric power lines. The Power Board removed the wires as a precaution. The first pull by the tractor snapped the cable and a heavier one had to be brought from Masterton. However, just as darkness set in this limb, which towered 120 ft, was brought down, according to plan. The workmen are to be complimented on the way the job was completed, as severel houses were | in danger from a fall in the wrong dir- i ection. There was a diversity of opin- I ion as to the destruction of this tree— Sentiment and love of trees against the safety of persons, and this time safety won.

Show Successes. At the Woodville Show Heapy’s Ltd (Greytown) won the championship in Jersey bulls, and also one second and two third prizes and a second in dairy cattle.
