ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

ANNUAL REPORT. NEED FOR FURTHER FUNDS. In its annual report for the year ended December 31. 1938. the St Vincent de Paul Society (St Patrick's Conference), wish to especially thank the Mayor. Mr T. Jordan, for his practical interest in their work. The Society is extremely grateful to the Borough Council for the free use of the Municipal Hall, on the occasion of the annual charity ball, also the general public for their generous support at all times, without which the work could not be carried on. Although general conditions are better. there are still many cases of hardship, and to carry on the good work it is now expedient to raise furthei funds. To do this, a beautiful picture, hand painted on velvet, is now being raffled. This picture was painted by Mother M. St Columba, of the Leeston Convent, the foremost artist in New Zealand in this type of art, and who. last year forwarded examples of her work to the Paris Exhibition. The pictures and special oxidised frame, were presented to the Society by the Community of the Leeston Convent to be raffled for the relief of distress in the Wairarapa. Several years ago a picture of this type, painted by the same artist, was raffled in Wellington and realised £75 in one day. The picture now being raffled and which is being exhibited in a window at the W.F.C.A., by courtesy of the management, is entitled “The Star of the East” and depicts the three kings obtaining their first view of the Holy City. The guiding star is shedding its light on the distant domes. The Society hope that the public will liberally support this effort to raise funds. Tickets are obtained from the W.F.C.A., Messrs Andrews and Levick. , R. Page, W. Orange and Pool and Sons.
