Personals. A former well-known Maori athlete, Mr Matthew Sullivan, has taken up his residence in Martinborough. He left the Bay of Islands, where he was born in 1960, and as a volunteer cadet was chosen as Lord Kitchener’s personal groom when that distinguished personage visited Christchurch. In his youthful days Sullivan was a wellknown Rugby player and a representative of Maori touring teams of 1907-8-9. In the latter year he left for Australia and while there played for the Eastern Suburbs Club, Sydney. As an allround athlete Sullivan (Herewini) had many successes in swimming and boxing. He held the amateur middleweight championship of New Zealand and for some time the middle-weight championship of New South Wales, winning on points over Frank Van after 15 rounds of hard fighting. He also took active interest in rowing and assisted Paddy Hannan, of Wellington, in training for his match against George Towns. Recently Mr Sullivan married the oldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Watene, Pirinoa. Mrs J. G. Sutherland, who has been a resident here for a number of years, will, it is understood, take up her residence in Carterton. Mrs J. R. Te Whaiti, who has been visiting relatives in Wanganui, has returned home.

Mrs Ross, who was the guest of her niece, Miss McDougall, over the holidays, has returned south. Mr R. McDougall and his daughters have returned from Napier. Miss Crosbie has been appointed assistant teacher at Featherston. Visit of Maoris. A large contingent of Maoris from the Gisborne district arrived on Thursday and were welcomed in real Maori fashion. They will stay here over the weekend and then return to Gisborne.
