Mr H. M. Ward, of Featherston, will leave on February 22 on a business visit to England. Sergeant T. H. Dyer, of Dannevirke, was a visitor to Masterton today as a member of the Manawatu Bowling Centre’s team. Dr R. Gardner, Dunedin, and formerly of Masterton, has been elected president of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry. Mr R. G. Drummond, engineer of the Tuapeka County Council, has been appointed engineer of the Dannevirke County Council. Dr R. M. Campbell, economic adviser to the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London will arrive at Auckland by the Monterey on February 17. He expects to be back in London by May.

Mr Colin L. Bailey, M.A., has been appointed to fill the position of lecturer in Education at Victoria University College. The vacancy was caused by the appointment of Mr A. E. Campbell to the directorship of the New Zealand Council for Educational Research.

The death occurred suddenly of Mr Francis Innes Ledger, a well-known surveyor, reports a Press Association telegram from Nelson. For many years he took a prominent part in organisations for the development of the district and was a past-president of the Nelson Chamber of Commerce and the Progress League.

Mr H. A. Major, of the staff- of the Bank of New South Wales, and Mrs Major, are at present visiting Masterton, and are staying with Mr Major’s mother. Mrs A. C. Major, Upper Plain. Mr Major lately completed a period of three years’ service in Suva, Fiji, and is at present on leave for three months. He has been transferred to Sydney. One of Wellington’s oldest residents. Mr William West Knowles, died at his residence yesterday at the age of 89 years. Mr Knowles was born in London and came to New Zealand with his parents about 1850. The family settled in Wellington . and Mr Knowles received his education at the old Terrace School. For some time after leaving school he worked with his father, the late Mr John Knowles, on the Wellington “Independent,” but later accepted a position with the Government in the Government Insurance Office. Mr Knowles, who celebrated his golden wedding eight years ago. is survived by his wife. There were no children.
