FARMING ON RESERVATIONS. OTTAWA. Indicating the extent of farming undertaken by Canadian Indians on the reservations provided by the Canadian Government, the area cultivated by them in 1938 totalled approximately 177,000 acres of which 45,196 acres were in oats, 39,043 acres in wheat, 34,497 acres in pastures. 29,258 acres in hay lands, 9,851 acres in barley and 5,899 acres in potatoes. The number of farm live stock on Indian reserves this year included 46.508 head of cattle. 28.406 horses, 4.722 hogs, 2,157 sheep, and 91.157 poultry.
